Best for Chilling out - Expert review of MuseumQuartier
Behind the nearly 300 year-old baroque facade of a former riding school a whole new world opened up in 2001. The MuseumsQuartier is among the ten largest cultural sites in the world and is rapidly becoming one of the hippest places in Vienna. It is one of the liveliest areas in the city and offers contemporary art and enjoyment for all ages.
Besides the world famous Leopold Museum , the other huge building within this space is the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art). Located just behind the MUMOK is the Architecture Centre which has a comprehensive library, and a permanent exhibition - a show covering the development of Austrian architecture in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Contemporary art exhibits are shown in the Kunsthalle. And there's lots of fun and games for kids in the ZOOM Children's Museum. The Dschungel Vienna even has a theatre for young audiences. Besides these and other institutions there are plenty of eateries, cafes and shops. One of my favourites is under the stairs to the MUMOK, full of the latest zany items – some of them useful and practical, others practically useless but cute. It's the kind of shop where you – or I – could spend all day.
Die Halle, MILO and Cafe Leopold are just three of the eateries worth mentioning – enough options to keep everyone happy.
For more detailed information about the MQ, and all it has to offer, have a look at the website, one of the best in Vienna – in my opinion – and if you decide to see all there is on offer then reckon on spending a day here.
