'The glory that was Rome' may lie in ruins – but they’re atmospheric ruins.
The political, administrative and social heart of Ancient Rome, the Forum was where the empire’s temples, law courts, senate houses and open-air meeting places were concentrated. On the Palatine Hill above, the regime’s power-brokers and VIPs built themselves villas and palaces (including the surprisingly modest House of Augustus, recently restored and opened to the public). Today this is an area of evocative ruins where cats roam among broken columns and fallen pediments.
Price advice:
Full price admission is 12 euros, and concessions are 7.50 euros. It is free for EU citizens under 18 and over 65.
Expert tips:
The ticket also includes entrance to the Colosseum.
As well as the main Via dei Fori Imperiali entrance, there's another quieter entrance in Via di San Gregorio.
