Expert review of Gibralfaro Castle
This is a historical gem set above the old city, offering wonderful views.
Surrounded by dense pines and eucalyptus trees, this castle – although in my opinion it’s more of a fortress - which sits atop a rocky outcrop, dominates the old centre’s skyline. In ancient times there was a Phoenician lighthouse on the site, but it’s probably best known for being the setting of a three month siege by the citizens of Malaga against the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, in the 14th century.
Today, there’s a small museum and you can wander around the castle for a small entrance fee. Although it’s a bit of a climb up some steep cobbled steps, I always reckon the views across the city and over the Mediterranean are worth it, especially at sunset.
Price advice:
It costs 1.80 euros to get inside the castle itself, although you can admire the same views outside for free.

It’s free after 2pm on Sundays.
Catch the city tour bus from Plaza de la Merced if you don’t fancy the walk up.
