Expert review of Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
A thousand outstanding works tell the story of 800 years of art history.
The museum's superlative collections of Western art from the 13th century to the 20th century were built up by the Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza family and extended by his son, Hans Heinrich. Divided into Old Masters and New Masters, the displays are arranged over three floors, in chronological order, starting at the top of the building. Housed in a neoclassical palace, highlights include paintings by Dürer, Titian, Raphael, Degas and Kandinsky. The Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza collection is displayed in a new extension. There is usually at least one temporary exhibition running too.
Price advice:
Admission to the main collection is 8 euros, whether bought online, by telephone or at the museum. See the website for discounts for over-65s, students etc. Temporary exhibitions cost around 7-8 euros if bought separately. Admission to the collection and a temporary exhibition is usually around 12 euros.
Expert tips:
In summer there is an excellent restaurant on the roof terrace.
