Best for History - Expert review of Castillo de San José
History, art and design come together in Lanzarote's top cultural attraction.
I am not sure what is the most appealing aspect here: the castle, the art, or the César Manrique designed restaurant. It's not really important, as you can easily enjoy all three in one visit. Known as the Hunger of Fortress, the castle was built in 1779 in the rather vain hope of reviving the islanders' fortunes after the great volcanic eruption of Timanfaya. Cross the moat and enter the spacious interior which beautifully, if rather incongruously, showcases contemporary art, including drawings, paintings and sculptures. Spiral steps lead down to a bar and restaurant designed by César Manrique.
Expert tips:
Combine a visit to the restaurant with a look at the castle museum.
