Expert review of La Orotava
Tenerife's most sophisticated and historic town.
Traditionally the home of Tenerife's aristocracy, La Orotava maintains its aristocratic air today and is my favourite town. Tour groups flock here to see the magnificent Casas de Los Balcones – the finest examples of traditional balconied houses on Tenerife. Also unmissable are the Gothic church, the Italian gardens, Casa Lercaro and the Town Hall...I could go on.
Expert tips:
Leave the crowds in Casa Del Turista and go into Casa Méndez-Fonseca opposite for its magnificent balconied courtyard, local wine and quirky museum upstairs.
Streets are steep – wear sensible footwear and at this height winter can be cooler so bring a sweater.
For Corpus Christi the town is decorated in intricate sand and flower tapestries. It's worth coming to Tenerife just to see and should be on every traveller's must-see list. In 2011 the flower carpets will be on June 30.
