Expert review of Korčula old town
I love Korčula's medieval historic centre, sitting compact on a small peninsular, protected by Venetian-era walls and sturdy bastions. You'll find the top attractions on the main square - the splendid Gothic-Renaissance cathedral, with a finely carved portal and elegant bell tower, and the Town Museum, housed in a 16th-century Renaissance palazzo. Another popular sight is the so-called Marco Polo House, a modest medieval stone building where locals claim the 13th-century epic traveller was born. Nearby, you’ll find the old town’s only hotel, the lovely Lesic Dimitri Palace. Thanks to its beautifully preserved old stone buildings, Korčula old town is on the UNESCO world heritage site’s ‘tentative’ list.
Entry into the old town is free. You pay to see inside the Cathedral, the Town Musuem and the Marco Polo House.
