Expert review of Garachico
Swim in rock pools in Tenerife's most picturesque town.
Once the wealthiest town on the island, Garachico was buried by a volcanic eruption in 1706 which destroyed its natural harbour - the source of its wealth. Risen from the lava, the town is now one of Tenerife's most popular day trip destinations.
Hewn from lava, the town's rock pools are teeming with tropical fish and are popular swimming venues for locals and visitors.
Expert tips:
Most day trippers stay around the rock pools and the craft shops on the promenade. Venture into the streets behind the front to discover the best of Garachico.
If you're planning on being in Tenerife in mid-August, don't miss the Romeria de San Roque in the town - oxen, carts, free food and wine and traditional dress.
