Expert review of Piazzale Michelangelo
Sure, it's touristy, but the views over Florence are spectacular.
It may be crowded with cars, coaches, tour groups and tacky souvenir stalls, but wide open Piazzale Michelangelo is one of the most popular and rewarding viewpoints of Florence. So take no notice of the grinning individuals having their photo taken against the marble balustrade and spectacular backdrop and get an eyeful of the whole city laid out below, the Arno sectioned by bridges old and new and the hills beyond. At sunset, as the river turns to molten gold, it is particularly impressive. The bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David is an 1875 monument to the artist.
