Expert review of Los Pedregales (Parque San Isidro)
Parque San Isidro, or Los Pedregales as it is known locally, is a large nature park located five kilometres to the north west of the town, ideal for bird-watching, horse riding, hiking and fishing. Huge, extended Spanish families head here for the weekends to camp under the stars or to have leisurely Sunday lunchtime barbecues among the trees. As my grilling skills are not what they should be, I usually meet everyone at the park’s bar or venta (country inn), as it saves having to cart everything backwards and forwards form home, frankly.
A new visitors' centre will be finished in summer 2011 which will offer maps of hiking routes and an exhibition charting the history of the area and ancient, local populations.
It is free to explore and picnic at Los Pedregales. The restaurant does great set menus starting from 10 euros.
