Best for Culture - Expert review of Dubrovnik City Walls
Any first time visit to Dubrovnik should begin with a full-circuit walk around the magnificent city walls. Originally built in the 13th century, they were reinforced with additional towers and bastions during the 15th century, due to fear of attack by the Ottoman Turks. Measuring 2km long, 24m high and up to 6m thick, they afford amazing views over the terracotta rooftops of the old town and out to sea. There are only two entrances into the old town (Pile Gate and Ploče Gate), both of which used to be locked each evening at sunset, to keep out unwanted visitors. To access the walls, climb the steps immediately to your left after passing through Pile Gate.
