Expert review of Castell Coch
The Third Marquis of Bute strikes again! Not just responsible for the stunning medieval attention to design on Cardiff Castle’s decor, or indeed bequeathing the whole of Bute Park to the city, he also devoted some of his riches to this medieval masterpiece that’s actually built on the ruins of an original castle built in the thirteenth century.
Castell Coch (or the Red Castle) peeps out of the trees on the very north of the city and looks every bit the fairytale dwelling outside and in. Whimsical and wonderful, Bute and his ally architect William
Burges spend a huge amount of time and effort on a castle that was lucky to see residence for more than a week every year. From the curvaceous turrets to the eye-bogglingly intricate interior via the fully working drawbridge, it’s not difficult to see why it’s a popular wedding location.
Castell Coch as easily accessible along the Taff trail and makes for a great location to cycle to from the city. It’s the top of a very steep hill, so mature travellers may want to visit by car.
Entry costs £3.80 for adults and £3.40 for concessions.
