The final resting place for Brussels’ great and the good.

The Ixelles cemetery is one of the most important cemeteries in Belgium; it’s the final resting place for a stellar line up of history’s greats, including Art Nouveau master Victor Horta, Frederic Neuhaus (inventor of the praline), violin virtuoso Eugène Ysaye, and Nobel prize-winners doctor Jules Bordet and scientist Ernest Solvay, among others.

It’s fascinating walking among the array of ornate tombstones and reading the various farewell messages. It’s also a lovely escape from the hubbub of the city.

Expert tips: 
The cemetery is a short distance from Bois de la Cambre — why not rent bikes and visit both?
