Expert review of Palau de la Música Catalana
Wildly extravagant architecture from one of the masters of Modernisme.
For most, Modernisme is synonymous with Gaudí, which is a shame. It means some of his talented contemporaries, such as Lluís Domènech i Montaner, who designed this fantastical wedding cake of a concert hall, are overlooked. But really, even if you only have a weekend in Barcelona, I urge you to see it – it’s a gem of the period, with its technicolour mosaic-work and effervescent sculpture.
The façade and foyer are stunning, but it’s also worth taking the guided tour to see the stained glass ceiling of the auditorium, and the bas-relief muses lining the stage.
Price advice:
12 euros; 10 euros reductions.
Expert tips:
An infinitely better way to experience the interior of the Palau is to catch a concert there – check the website for programming.
