Best for Families - Expert review of NEMO
This hands-on science centre is the best indoor attraction in Amsterdam for families.
Rising out of the harbour just east of the Centraal Station, copper-clad NEMO looks like the prow of a ship. And it looks fun. Which I can promise you it is, if you've got children in tow. I've taken my boys here, and we spent a whole morning doing things like stepping inside giant bubbles and making frozen shadows. There is also lots that will engage older children, including a Teen Facts section.
Price advice:
Those aged four or older pay 12.50 euros; under 4s are free, as are those with a Museumkaart or I amsterdam Card.
Expert tips:
NEMO’s sloping roof - a stepped terrace with a café and great views - is free to visit: ie you don't need to pay to get in to NEMO to access it. From the end of June to early September, something of a party atmosphere prevails.
Moored outside NEMO is a full-scale, replica 18th-century sailing ship, The Amsterdam. It's also great fun to explore (look out for the (fake) rat), but is not part of NEMO so costs extra - a joint ticket with NEMO is available.
