Expert review of Bodega
I am very grateful to the receptionist at my hotel for recommending this restaurant to me some time ago. I still remember her eyes lighting up as she told me about her birthday meal here, in a 100-year-old house, with hulking white walls dripping with authentic Canarian antiques.
Although you can get dishes like steak, paella and fish, I strongly recommend you go for the tapas, which is what this place does best. Wash it all down with a local dry white (generally much better than the reds) from the extensive list.
You can't go wrong with the tapas here. Last time I visited I had strong, slightly salty ham, melt-in-the-mouth octopus and pungent garlic prawns, which were all as they should be – assured, simple dishes with the freshest local ingredients. Note that there is a separate menu in Spanish only, which you have to ask for if you are obviously a foreigner.
This tapas bar/restaurant with lots of hidden corners and low lighting is a romantic spot perfect for a special occasion. Occasionally, larger groups of tourists can spoil the atmosphere a bit by being noisy and even rude to the waiters.
During busy evenings, there can be a bit of a wait for service, but it is usually friendly and efficient.
It's on a hill just out of the old town in the centre of the resort.
Tapas goes for around 6 euros to 9 euros a plate, with most main courses under around 20 euros.
I would avoid the tables in the back room, as you can tend to get rather forgotten about by the staff.
