Expert review of El Far
You can’t really beat a lighthouse for a bird’s eye view and for me, this cliff-top restaurant, just a few yards along from the lighthouse after which it’s named, has some of the best views on the Costa Brava. You can see the gorgeous bays of Llafranc, Tamariu and Calella de Palafrugell all down below you, and after a leisurely lunch taking the half hour coastal path down to Llafranc is the ideal way to walk if off.
Food is traditional Catalan served in an upmarket contemporary style with, as you might expect this close to the sea, an emphasis on fish. Round these parts, they’re also very keen on what they call mar i muntanya - literally sea and mountain or what we’d normally call surf and turf - with dishes like casserole of meatballs with squid or sausages with mushrooms and prawns. I personally prefer one at a time and I’ve always very much enjoyed the fish here. There’s also a themed monthly menu which changes monthly to focus on different produce eg artichokes in March, prawns in July, mushrooms in October.
There is formal dining in the main dining rooms and on the terrace, although there is a conservatory area overlooking the promontory which is more laid back. The main dining room has vaulted ceiling arches, reflecting the building’s 18th-century origins, and is painted in nautical, sunny blues and whites.
The staff are efficient if a little unsmiling.
It's high up the mountain-top by the lighthouse.
The seasonal monthly menu costs €30 and the menu of the day is €20.
