Expert review of Babycakes
The best gluten-free bakery in New York City, if not the country.
Babycakes doesn't serve meals but you can make a meal out of the bakery's amazing cupcakes, cookies and donuts. As someone who suffers from celiac disease, finding gluten-free desserts is pretty difficult. Thank God for Babycakes. Their cupcakes are moist and delicious (my friends can't believe the frosting is vegan) and the gluten-free donuts are better than the normal variety. I love to indulge here after a night out dining in an area establishment.
Food and drink:
It's all desserts and baked goods, nothing savory. The drinks range includes coffee and hot chocolate.
Recommended dishes:
I love all the cupcakes but think the carrot cupcake is the best of the bunch. Everything is made from scratch using gluten-free flour (usually corn or tapioca starch), coconut milk and oil and agave nectar (some items use sugar and spelt). The glazed donuts have won many awards and if you bite into one, you can't believe it's egg and dairy free. It's that good.
Ambience:
This is a very small space with seating for maybe six people at counters or in window seats. The clientele features celebrities such as Natalie Portman, locals and tourists, and runs the gamut from young to old.
Service:
The staff are attired in retro-apron dresses. Some of them have an attitude but some are super friendly.
Location:
On Broome Street on the Lower East Side. There are a number of restaurants in the area and it's close to the F subway line.
Price advice:
Pretty affordable considering the quality. Two cupcakes set you back about $9. The bakery also does special orders and delivers large orders.
