Best for Trendiness - Expert review of La Moraga
Malaga-born Dani Garcia is one of Spain’s most famous chefs and chose his hometown to launch his “gourmet tapas experience". He’s taken some classic tapas recipes and transformed them into, and I don’t use this phrase lightly, gastronomic masterpieces. Heston Blumenthal would be impressed. This is arguably one of the hippest spots right now.
The tapas listed are divided into nine sections - cold, soups, dips, fried, flamenquín (rolled, fried bites), filled speciality breads, skewers, stews and desserts. Each section has about four items to choose from. My highlights include the white anchovy lasagne and the spinach flamenquíns. And for pudding it’d be a difficult choice between the bitter lemon tart and the intense chocolate mousse. I’d recommend not having the tasting menu as it restricts the spontaneous element of eating tapas.
If, like me, you always like to be in the thick of it, go for elbow-to-elbow dining at the long, underlit, stainless steel bar instead of the small room at the back.
The service is extremely professional. You can tell the staff are foodies themselves.
It's tucked away down a quiet backstreet just off Calle Larios, Malaga's famous shopping street.
This is probably one of the most expensive places to eat tapas, but these are no ordinary tapas! Expect to pay about 60 euros for dinner for two. The tasting menu for two is 75 euros and includes seven tapas each.

Quite right, Annie! Thanks. As you know, Dani García is certainly one of Spain's best and most-celebrated chefs, but I am just hoping that as he opens more and more establishments he's not going to let his high standards slip. So far, so good though...
He's also justifiably one of Malaga’s most lauded public figures. He’s continually in the Spanish press, awarded with prestigious prizes, and the darling of the tourism and government authorities. ( http://www.diariosur.es/20110215/local/malaga/medallas-reaccion-dani-gar... )
Is he the new Antonio Banderas (who is the area’s unofficial spokesman on everything)? I hope the gushing publicity doesn’t become ‘overkill’ or the public, and especially snobbish food critics, will back off, and his star rating will take a tumble which would be a great shame.
Love La Moraga, but it's not 'Michelin-starred' - not yet at least. Chef Dani Garcia's two Michelin stars are for his restaurant Calima.
