Expert review of Albion
A sunny hangout for the better-heeled peeps of Shoreditch.
It’s not so long ago that Redchurch Street was a no-go area, now it’s home to the sort of ritzy florists and cosmetic houses you’d find in Mayfair – and, on the corner with Boundary Street, a Terence Conran hotel with this cheerful bistro-deli-bakery on the ground floor.
Food and drink:
Mostly British comfort food, including breakfast and light-ish bites such as sandwiches. The scrambled eggs are slightly too granular for my taste but have a wonderful rich flavour and come with several generous folds of velvety smoked salmon. Buttery pastries such as pain aux raisin and the sausage rolls are supersized to be a hearty meal in themselves. Pies are a matter of pride too, with options including chicken and crayfish, and a game pie for two.
Ambience:
Not caff-like, but typically Conran casual, with carefully chosen decorative details such as cream enamel jugs for water and cutlery sitting in old golden syrup tins. Custom is more grown up than most Shoreditch venues but still fashion-conscious.
Service:
Good, and smartly styled of course.
Location:
A gentrified corner on a narrow road just back from the high street.

Great value given the quality of cooking and smart surroundings: mains are £8.75-£11.50, desserts £5-£7. Breakfast prices are on the high side (the signature full English is a tenner, porridge with prunes an ambitious £5.50) but you’re unlikely to be disappointed, or left hungry.
