Expert review of El Lago
I was introduced to this restaurant by Tila, the owner of Lanzarote Retreats. Named El Lago ('The Lake') after a watery installation inside the restaurant, the owner is called Angel – or did I just imagine that because he was so smiley and serene?
The menu here is pretty classic for the island, offering a full range of meat, fish and salads. Ask for wine recommendations; the waiting staff are very helpful. I had an Irish coffee at the end of my meal, courtesy of Tila. I drank it in honour of my Irish grandmother, with whom I used to indulge. Not typically Spanish, I know – the others had a cafe con leche y leche – coffee with milk and milk, condensed and frothy milk, which is apparently a local specialty.
We went for the fish and seafood platter to share for four, which I can highly recommend: tuna carpaccio on toast, stuffed seafood peppers, crispy baby squid and fish croquettes.
The simple terrace next to the road and looking out to sea is the place to be on a sunny lunchtime. Inside, the more formal, traditional restaurant is more suitable for a meal on a cooler evening.
Both our waiters – Angel, the owner, and a grinning, lively Moroccan lad were fast and friendly. And both speak excellent English.
It's on the edge of Arrieta, on the road to Punta Mujeres next to the sea.
The prices here are reasonable, although not cheap. The portions are pretty big: consider sharing one or two dishes.

Fantastically welcoming to children. Enough variation in the menu to keep all the family happily fed. Good steak, lovely fish, super rice and lobster dish. Highly recommended for families.
We have been to this lovely restaurant numerous times over the last 4 years, and it has always been consistent in terms of both food, and the excellent friendly service.
The sauces are particularly good with various, freshly cooked meat or fish dishes.
The terrace is overlooking the sea and great on a nice sunny day, or indoors in the evening or cooler days ( not many on Lanzarote)
