Expert review of Fuoriporta
A classic Florentine enoteca with an impressive wine list and a charming terrace.
I particularly enjoy coming to this enoteca (wine bar) in the summer when tables are laid out on the pavement overlooking the old city gate of San Miniato; Fuori porta means ‘outside the gate’. It’s been around for many years, but keeps up with the times in its continually evolving wine list and menus.
Food and drink:
Although there are many tempting dishes on the menu, the raison d’etre of this place is its 600 plus label wine list which covers the whole of Italy and beyond, although Tuscany and Piemonte are particularly favoured. Some 35 wines are available by the glass and a 250cl carafe (these change every week or so) and there’s also an impressive menu of whiskys and grappas. You can come here just for a drink, but to soak it all up, the menu ranges from tempting snacks such as hot, grilled crostone and crostini with various toppings to salads, cheese and meat platters and good pasta dishes. Last time I was here I ate ricotta and spinach-stuffed mezzelune (half-moon ravioli) with fresh tomato sauce and they were delicious.
Ambience:
With its long bar counter, dark wood panelling and simple furnishings, the décor recalls that of a traditional vineria. It’s nice and relaxed at lunchtimes and in the early evenings but the various backrooms fill up and the atmosphere livens up later on.
Service:
The staff are friendly and relaxed. Andrea, the owner, certainly knows his wine.
Location:
It's in the eastern reaches of the Oltrarno just above Porta San Miniato in the San Niccolò neighbourhood.
Price advice:
Wines by the glass start at 3-3.50 euros, although if you are planning several, it works out cheaper to buy a bottle. Crostoni cost from 5.50 euros; a more substantial meal will cost about 25 euros excluding wine.
