Best for Dining alone - Expert review of Melissa's The Food Shop
The top gun in the Melissa's family of food shops, the Kloof Street store is my favourite (I even worked there years and years ago). Here you'll find City Bowl dwellers kicking back with their favourite magazine while sampling wares off the menu or breakfast and lunch buffets. There are shelves laden with gourmet foodie gifts and fridges crammed with their own homemade fresh products.
Comfort, preservative free and unpretentious food is their focus as is evident on the daily lunch buffet that is laden with moreish salads, quiches and a casserole or curry choice (soup too in the winter months). There are also café favourites to order off the menu. Food this good comes at a price though and wine choices are limited.
I'm a fan of their fluffy omelettes, have been known to eat more than is polite off the buffet (especially when there's Malay chicken curry on) and rarely manage to resist a vanilla cupcake when I pop in to buy a gift for a foodie loving friend. They serve light eats in the late afternoon and early evening.
Melissa's is laid back and informal with a lovely local buzz.
Unpredictable.
At the top end of trendy Kloof Street.
Main courses are, on average, 80 rand.
No bookings are taken but I like to sit at the window counter.
There are Melissa's dotted around the city, check the website below for details.
