Best for Gourmets - Expert review of Costes
Rarely will you see a restaurant make a more determined attempt to improve itself - over the last couple of years, staff at Costes have visited some of the greatest restaurants in Europe and even spent a fortnight working in a top kitchen in France. The hard work has paid off, and - despite a change of chef at the start of 2010 - the restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star.
This is inventive international cuisine; the quality is as good as you’ll find in Budapest. Among the current choices are veal sweetbreads with liquorice and monkfish tail with a goulash sauce.
Your best bet during a first visit is to try one of the tasting menus - there are five- or eight-course options.
The décor is contemporary, rich and elegant, with soft browns, beiges and creams.
It's formal - the waiters actually wear white gloves.
It's on Ráday utca, a street of bars that has considerably smartened itself up in recent years and now challenges Liszt Ferenc tér for custom on a night out.
It’s not cheap, but given the quality of the ingredients and the Michelin star, the prices are far from unreasonable. The eight-course tasting menu costs 26,000 forints (36,000 forints with wines), the five-course menu is 18,000 forints (25,000 forints with wines) and the five-course vegetarian menu is 15,000 forints (20,000 forints with wines). There are business lunch menus for 5,400 forints (two courses) and 6,400 forints (three courses).
