Expert review of Quimet i Quimet
The tiny Quimet i Quimet has been around for donkey’s years (as have many of the bottles lining its walls) and is still unmatched for great wines and superb tapas.
The two specialities are conservas (tinned clams, cockles and so on) and montaditos – tapas mounted on slices of bread. These are largely improvised from the array of gourmet foodstuffs on the counter – ventresca (tuna belly), sushi-grade salmon, grilled peppers, cheeses from around Spain and a host of other things – according to where your tastes lie.
There are no tables (there is no room for tables) and this little room, open to the street one side, is as high as it is wide, with bottles of wine stacked up to the ceiling. It’s a riotous affair, and always packed.
It’s a little hard to elbow your way to the bar to get served, but once you’re there you’ll find consummate professionals, skilled in helping clueless tourists.
A quiet residential street in Poble Sec.
