Expert review of Winkel
Having a slice of apple pie at the Winkel is a must-do, for hip locals and down-to-earth tourists alike. This is particularly true on Saturdays, when the food market on the Noordermarkt is in full swing.
The pie in question comes in a thick, generously proportioned slice, is warm, cinnamon flavoured, filled with chunks of sweet apple, and baked to a perfect crust - it will be one of the best things you eat in Amsterdam. As long as you don't pay extra for a squirt of cream, which is disgusting. On Saturdays, they just do the pie and sandwiches. On other days, you can also get soup, salads, eggs - but I'd stick to just the apple pie.
The place comes in to its own when it's warm enough to sit outside - there's a lot of hovering at peak times to grab a spot at a vacant table. Inside, it's a bit scuzzy.
You need to go inside and queue at the counter, and at weekends be prepared for a wait to get served.
On the corner of the Noordermarkt (where it meets the Westerstraat). The canal-adjacent square is one of the loveliest spots in the city.
A slice of apple pie costs 3 euros.

We had to sit inside because it was raining. Couldn't see much from the bar-stool type seats at the sidecounter but found service to be friendly and capable - and the pie was indeed fab and worth the walk in the rain up the west side of Prinsengracht.
