Expert review of La Place
It's rare for me to visit Amsterdam and not pop in at some point to the self-service cafeteria of the V&D department store. Why? Well, the food is fresh, inexpensive and very varied, and you can be in and out in super quick time.
Downstairs, there's a bakery offering excellent ciabatta sandwiches, wedges of quiche and pizza, muffins, brownies, and slices of apple pie - just the place to stock up on a picnic before heading for a canalside bench or the Vondelpark (or you can eat any of this in the café). Upstairs lies an enticing salad bar, home-made yoghurt drinks, and several food stations where you can order grilled meats and stir frys, cooked to order while you wait.
Bustling - but there are quietish corners to take your meal and eat. The eating areas could be kept a bit cleaner.
Absolutely fine. No table service. Pity you have to pay to use the loo.
The main entrance is on Kalverstraat, one of the city’s busiest shopping streets, at the Munt Tower end.
Sandwiches cost from 3 euros, hot dishes from around 8-15 euros.
