Appealing café on the Museumplein - its big terrace is a major selling point.

While the Rijksmuseum is undergoing its long restoration programme it is without a café, and the Van Gogh Museum's café is no great shakes. So what are the options for a snack or drink in the vicinity? The most obvious spot is Cobra Café, which takes its name from the late 1940s expressionist art movement.

Food and drink: 

Sandwiches, soups, burgers and fries, eggs, salads, poffertjes (mini, light Dutch pancakes), apple pie. Drinks include cocktails, and gluhwein in winter.

Ambience: 

The modern, glass-sided building has Cobra art on the walls and the (rather faded) floor. If the weather's fine, most people opt to sit out on the large terrace, watching the children muck around on the Museumplein's playground, and clamber over the giant Iamsterdam promotional letters.

Brisk.

At the top of Museumplein, behind the Rijksmuseum.

Price advice: 

From 5 euros for a sandwich or the poffertjes. Pity you have to pay to use the loos (50 cents).
