Best for On a budget - Expert review of Barcarola
A real oasis that feels like an exclusive, intimate private residence.
To me, this lovely ‘club’ is a little bit of Lanzarote magic. Just off the main drag of the resort, a discreet entrance leads to a compact oasis of towering palms, native plants and well-kept lawns dotted with apartments that is a world away from the hustle and bustle.
Location:
In the middle of the resort near to its beaches, shops, restaurants and sports facilities, yet set back from the main road in a quiet spot.
Bedrooms:
Attractive apartments in a series of separate buildings in tasteful local style are set back from the pool area, providing an element of privacy. Very comfortable and distinctly upmarket, there are 83 in all (18 of which are two bedroom), all with lounge and full kitchen. Those on the upper floor have a balcony; lower-floor apartments have a terrace. The apartments themselves are immaculate and furnished to a high standard.

Public areas:
When I last visited, a recent refurbishment was very much in evidence, although this lovely little complex always seems to be kept in tip top condition. A small, simple reception painted pale blue with a few cane chairs is designed as a resting place should you need to wait for reception (rarely necessary).
Eating and drinking:
The pleasant buffet restaurant is used for breakfast, and there is a simple pool bar offering daytime snacks.
Leisure facilities:
The pool area is large for a complex of this size, especially taking into account the close proximity of the beach. A couple of pool tables sit next to the swimming pool, and a rather surreal giant chess board has pride of place on the lawn. The ‘club’ has a high level of facilities for a complex this size, entertainment six days of the week and a kids' club and playground.
Service:
Cheerful and helpful - after a while the staff can feel like old friends.

Lots of repeat guests, and a real variety of European nationalities. Mature guests, families and couples.
