Best for Romance - Expert review of Gran Meliá Volcán Lanzarote
I think this imaginatively designed hotel in the style of a Canarian village is a delight. A splendid replica of Teguise’s church, complete with Gregorian chanting, leads to a waterfall and garden atrium reception in a giant ‘volcano’. Not as Las Vegas as it sounds and very much in keeping with local style and atmosphere.
Next to the sea, with direct access to the Rubicón Marina and a kilometre from the resort of Playa Blanca.
255 rooms, all with balcony or terrace and a choice of a garden, pool or sea view. 48 of these are ‘Royal Service’, in a separate part of the hotel with its own lounge, pool and outdoor terrace with bar and Balinese beds and breakfast restaurant. All Royal Service rooms are the same size as standard rooms, but have a sea view, private terrace, hi-fis and more luxurious furnishings. Some of the standard rooms are a little dark and uninspiring.

Very spacious, with lots of different areas for sunbathing by the five swimming pools, all of which are fresh water (a rarity on the island), and four of which are heated. There is also a designated area for families near the children’s pool. Hidden squares, patios and plazas with fountains give the feeling that you are wandering around a village.
The restaurants in this hotel are an attraction their own right. I loved the buffet restaurant, La Florida, on a pontoon over the pool, which made me feel as if I were in the Caribbean. The Japanese restaurant, Kazan, is another big draw, and there is also a designated lunch restaurant and pool snack bar. As if that were not enough, there is a gourmet and Italian restaurant in the marina that can be paid for with your room bill.
The club house is a nice touch, where guests can take part in activities and even join handicraft workshops. Kids are catered for in the mini club, while adults can use the large modern spa. Sporty types are catered for by the 24-hour gym, squash court and diving lessons in the pool; book worms can retreat to the cosy, well stocked library. Entertainment is as sophisticated as the hotel: guests are treated to live ambient sax or piano music three times a week.
Five star yet friendly. It is hard to fault the service here, especially given it is such a large hotel, but the staff on reception were a bit hassled when I arrived and I had a bit of a wait.

English and German guests mostly. Some groups, but mostly couples, including honeymooners and those celebrating special occasions.
I really would recommend paying more for a ‘Royal Service’ room which has so many desirable extras. It is perfect for a splurge or a special occasion.
