A trendy downtown gem with friendly service.
Not so long ago, the neighborhood around this hotel, which opened in 2007, was a hold-out of the lower East Side’s seedy past with its grim flophouses and drug dens. But the Bowery is a testament to the area’s new regeneration without feeling precious. I love the location - it's the perfect launching pad to SoHo, the West Village and Union Square areas while visiting new arrivals like the Museum of Contemporary Art nearby. And I like that the hotel itself feels like a great mix old New York while still being stylish and trendy but not pretentious.
Location:
On the east border of SoHo so the perfect location for visiting that neighborhood as well as Union Square. The Bowery, though a major thoroughfare, feels relatively tranquil on this stretch.
Bedrooms:
The rooms mix faux boudoir furnishings like fringed lamps and velvet covered sofas with huge floor to ceiling windows over downtown - ask for a room with a fireplace and oversize bathtub for two in the chillier months.

Public areas:
The downstairs public areas feel like the grand living rooms of a wealthy mansion with lots of carpets, dark woods and cozy sofas. There is a small oak paneled bar off the main lobby which is one of the city’s most convivial spots (I often have business meetings or meet friends after work there).
Eating and drinking:
Gemma, the onsite restaurant, has good Italian food from breakfast to late night.
Leisure facilities:
There is no spa or gym here.
Service:
The staff are generally efficient and friendly but service can get slow when the place is fully booked.
