A stalwart of Marbella's jet-set social scene and an iconic place to stay.
The hotel, which has played host to the likes of Michael Jackson and Julio Iglesias, threw open its doors again last August after being closed for several months following its previous owners’ (a Russian oil group) alleged ‘financial irregularities’. As soon as I could, I rushed back to this ‘grande dame’ of a hotel to have a sundowner in the famous beach club and it felt like a home-coming.
Location:
On Marbella’s famous ‘golf mile’, just to the east of the town centre, on the main A-7 motorway.
Bedrooms:
All classic rooms and suites have high-end gadgets and WiFi which sit comfortably in the lavishly-furnished, old-world surroundings. Ask for a room overlooking the manicured gardens, as I’ve found some of the rooms can be a bit noisy, as the cars whizz along the main road.

Public areas:
With shady interior patios, ornate fountains and arched walkways, the hotel has a typically Andalusian look and a friendly, almost southern California-style, feel. Despite its charmed heritage, I’ve never experienced the snootiness you can sometimes get in a hotel of this calibre. With a heady mix of holidaymakers and ‘Marbella belles’ (the local ladies-who-lunch) there are lots of people buzzing around to maintain the lively atmosphere.
Eating and drinking:
The wood-panelled dining room of El Corzo restaurant (which has been the setting for countless society parties) begs you to linger over the Mediterranean-inspired food, created by Thomas Stork, and I’ve never been able to drag myself away before midnight. But I make sure I get up early to grab a poolside table at El Flamingo for breakfast.
Leisure facilities:
The hotel’s own exclusive beach club, La Cabane, is one of the most popular in the area with locals in-the-know, who now tend to shun the chain-run establishments. The shimmering Mediterranean Sea is the stunning backdrop as you sip cocktails on your sun lounger.
Service:
Very welcoming. The staff are exceptionally eager to please following the bad press generated during the closure.

Exceptionally reasonable in the winter for a hotel like this, although prices soar above average in the summer.
