Expert review of Hotel Verta
With its airy waterfront location and helicopters whizzing past the windows, the 70-room Hotel Verta has brought a very welcome jet-set buzz to London's luxury hotel scene since opening in September 2010. While the Battersea location will be too out of the way for some, I like its flair and confident style. There's some mild and enjoyable theming - for example, turndown treats are labelled 'Chocs Away' - and if you're drawn to the idea of a five-star urban hideaway with good food, tip-top service, a high-class spa and romantic bedrooms, check in now.
'London's Vertical Gateway', as the hotel likes to call itself, sits on the south bank of the Thames midway between Battersea and Wandsworth Bridges. It seems to be in absolute nowhere but it isn't really. The website says it's a ten-minute walk from Clapham Junction and having timed it myself it does take exactly that. This rail station is just a seven-minute ride from Victoria (you can use your Oystercard), and you can of course get a taxi here from several Underground stations, or drive here (it's outside the Congestion Zone), then take advantage of the valet parking service.
Rooms are quietly sexy with blissful beds, cosy bathrobes, interesting paperbacks and tea/coffee facilities backed up with - hurrah! - fresh milk in the minibar. Quadruple-glazing keeps the sound of whirring helicopters at bay and the serene bathrooms come with a TV in the wall. Rising to five floors, all the rooms offer the same treats - the more you pay the more space you get. I like those facing the heliport best (flights stop at 10pm), while most suites have terrific river views.

The hotel's interiors are slick, colourful and glossy with an eye-catching mix of fashion shots and paintings reflecting on the glamour of luxury travel. Upstairs, the corridors are theatrically dark with black doors and walls.
The ground-floor Patrisey restaurant has a semi-open kitchen offering a wide-ranging menu of more than 50 mainly British dishes including Torbay lemon sole, Lancashire hot pot and Lady Astor sherry trifle. It's a classy affair while upstairs the plush emerald seats of Bar Vertilon are a fun spot for a 'Jet Fuel' cocktail. As there aren't many alternative dining options in the area, it's a relief to know the food here is good.
A two-level subterranean spa offers top class treatments using Anne Semonin, Comfort Zone and Mama Mio beauty products. You'll also find a vitality pool, thermal rooms and fitness centre, plus friendly staff.
A masterful mix of elegance and efficiency. There's a hint of the air stewardess in the smartly dressed female staff with their bright red shoes, nails and lips. The guys are handsome too, with dapper red ties and an energetic air.
