Expert review of Vik Hotel San Antonio
Excellent all-round beachfront four-star hotel, with a great location and facilities.
This big, bold, no-nonsense hotel does exactly what it says on the tin and more. Generous to its guests in everything from food quality to facilities, there really is something for all ages here.
Location:
On the beach of Play de los Pocillos, in a quiet part of Puerto del Carmen.
Bedrooms:
Most of the standard rooms have sea views. A small criticism is that the furnishings are a little chintzy and dated and the rooms themselves are rather compact. Family rooms and suites have a spacious living area. Try to get a room on the upper floor; those on the ground floor can be quite dark.

Public areas:
Overlooking the beach are two large swimming pools (one seawater and one freshwater) and a children’s pool. Surrounded by an extensive terrace area dotted with palms where the sunloungers really are too close together.
Eating and drinking:
The buffet restaurant is of classic design, with comfortable chairs, carpeted floors and starched linen tablecloths. The food itself is innovative for a Lanzarote hotel of this style: as well as all the usual international offerings, every night a chef cooks up a different cuisine. When I was there, Indian was on offer, but it could be Japanese, Italian or Asian fusion. I thought the no-shorts rule in the restaurant a little unnecessary. As well as the functional pool bar, there is a comfortable 'cocktail' bar, although most guests seem to prefer the beer.
Leisure facilities:
Sports facilities include a gym, billiards, ping pong and tennis courts; the hotel also has three convention rooms and a small kids playground. A varied entertainment programme includes different dancing and singing styles. Kids are entertained in summer with a well run mini club and nightly children’s disco, which always seems popular. A sauna, massage and Turkish bath can be had in the spa area.
Service:
Although there is the odd person working in the restaurant who is unfriendly, and I saw a couple of mix-ups on reception, on the whole the staff are lovely, as well as efficient, and quick to rectify any mistakes. Room service is available – unusual for a four-star hotel in Lanzarote. A bottle of bubbly and fresh fruit is often put in the room if reception knows you are celebrating a special occasion – a nice touch.

Who stays there:
A whole host of people - from young families to older couples and groups of friends, which is indicative of the range of facilities on offer. Off season, the hotel sees a lot of mature travellers.
Price advice:
I found the drinks at the bar are pretty expensive; there are plenty of bars nearby with more reasonable prices.
