Expert review of Hotel Kazbek
Luxury boutique hotel in a beautiful 16th-century stone villa, near Dubrovnik ferry port.
Built in 1578 by a local noble family as their summer residence, this Renaissance villa was carefully renovated to open as a small luxury hotel in summer 2008. Entered through a walled courtyard, set back from the water’s edge, it offers a peaceful aristocratic ambience. There are 12 rooms and one suite, a secluded outdoor pool and a gourmet restaurant. It’s possible to rent a whole floor or even the entire complex for functions such as a wedding or conferences.
Location:
On Lapad peninsular, overlooking Gruž harbour, a 10-minute walk from the ferry landing station and a 25-minute walk from Dubrovnik Old Town (served by regular bus, journey time 10 minutes).
Bedrooms:
All the rooms have polished parquet floors, king-size beds, oriental rugs and sweeping brocade curtains tied with cords with tassels. The slick en-suite bathrooms come with either a bathtub or shower, plus Mugler toiletries. My favourite rooms are on the top floor, with wooden beamed sloping ceilings making them exceptionally cosy.

Public areas:
Breakfast and dinner are served in an impressive stone vaulted dining room, or on the terrace in the front courtyard planted with Mediterranean shrubs. Out the back, there’s a walled courtyard garden with a pool. Guests have the use of a small library, complete with a laptop with internet (free). The property is non-smoking.
Eating and drinking:
The Kazbek’s cooked-to-order breakfast, eaten in the sunny courtyard garden, makes a fine way to start the day. For dinner, the restaurant serves a selection of regional dishes, such as Istrian pasta with asparagus and black truffles, or veal steak with Pag cheese. Occasional live music is staged in the front courtyard on summer evenings.
Leisure facilities:
There’s a heated outdoor pool with Jacuzzi, sun beds and a poolside bar in the walled courtyard garden behind the hotel, plus a sauna. The hotel’s sailing yacht and speedboat, moored in the marina out front, are available for private excursions, with skipper and guide if required.
