Expert review of Parador de Aiguablava
Clifftop parador amid pine woods, with stunning sea views and a sandy cove.
Location, location, location goes the mantra, and this parador’s setting couldn’t be better. The views are absolutely breathtaking. Don’t come expecting a converted old castle or convent though. Built in the 60s, this is one of the more modern paradors, and the ground floor lounge areas have got a bit of a retro feel in the decor, with orange space-age style lighting and the slightly airport-like feel of a James Bond set. If you like that kind of ‘big hotel’ feel, you’ll love it.
Location:
Perched on a clifftop above the sea, with a path down through the pine trees to the small, secluded cove below. Otherwise, it’s a short drive to the nearby beaches of Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell. The medieval hilltop Begur has a brilliant choice of good restaurants and bars, and is likewise a short drive away.
Bedrooms:
Rooms are all traditionally and simply furnished with TV, mini-bars and safes, but it’s the views which you’ll remember. There are 63 twins, ten doubles and five suites.

Public areas:
The terrace with its sweeping, 180-degree, panoramic views of the coast is worth a visit alone. Otherwise, the ground floor lounge areas as above. Also a bar, a gift shop and some lovely gardens with palm trees surrounding the main pool that are perfect for a gentle early evening stroll.
Eating and drinking:
There’s a very large scale restaurant on the ground floor (too large for me personally), and also another smaller one on the beach for lunch.
Leisure facilities:
Gym, swimming pool and sauna. The hotel can also arrange boat trips to nearby private coves, as well as golf, parachuting and horse-riding and for bird-watchers, the Aiguamols National Park nature reserve is nearby.
Service:
Efficient and helpful.
